From Navacerrada to Cercedilla taking the Schmidt trail

senalizacion-en-el-caminoName: Schmidt trail

Distance: 12.5 km

Uphill: 286 m

Difficulty: easy

Track GPS: here

Note: trail with start and end points at train stations

By means of this not circular trail we will walk from Puerto de Navacerrada to Cercedilla, using the well known for mountaineers Schmidt trail.

To arrive to Puerto de Navacerrada the best option is by train. At Madrid we have a train net called “Cercanías”, which connects Madrid Center with its surroundings and also with the nearest cities. The Cercanías stations are usually located at the same places as Metro stations, but be aware not all Metro stations are also a Cercanias station (the most known ones are Atocha and Chamartín), you can check them at Renfe website, clicking at “Plano”. Once you are in one of these stations, you have to follow this logo to get to the Cercanías platforms:

And then, look at the correct platform for line C8B direction Segovia. You need to take two trains in order to get there, first you have to get to Cercedilla and there transfer towards Puerto de Navacerrada:

  • Train C8B from Madrid to Cercedilla. Take care because there are two C8 trains, the C8A goes to Ávila and the C8B goes to Segovia. C8B is the one you should take.
  • Once in Cercedilla, you will have to change the train to the C9. This is a mountain train which will take you up to Puerto de Navacerrada.

You can check at Renfe website the train schedule, depending on the Cercanías train station which is suitable for you and at Aemet web page the weather forecast.

From Puerto de Navacerrada train station, we will start the trip going up to the Puerto de Navacerrada itself, where we will arrive at Venta Arias restaurant. From there, you have to continue to the left following a small road which will take you to the starting point of the route.

There is no doubt, as there is a signal indicating the way. From there it is only necessary to follow the yellow circles in the trees and the signals “Camino Schmidt”. This part goes through a pine forest.

In about 6 kms from Puerto de Navacerrada, we will arrive to Collado Ventoso.

If you follow the path down in a few kms you will find a crossing (a few meters below the Mirador de la Reina, located to the right), where it is necessary to decide the way down:

  • By the Calzada Romana, a direct descent to Cercedilla using the old Calzada Romana, with rocks all the way down.

  • By the Carretera de la República. This option would imply about 4.5 kms more than the first option, but it is easier as it is a small road only open to walkers and bikes.

Even if you take the first option, during the last kms the path will follow the Carretera de la República.

Hi, I think it’s a good idea to point out to your readers that hikers should take the turn to Collado Ventoso (to the left) instead of the one to the right to Puerto Fuenfría, which would add a couple of miles to their hike (not nice in winter. This fork, I believe, comes about 2.5 hours from the trail head at Puerto Navacerrada in the summer (never done it in the winter so can’t say how long it would take). Cheers.
