From El Escorial to El Abantos and Cruz de los Caídos

The starting point of this hike is El Escorial, a city located at the Northwest side of Madrid, well known by its Monasterio.This hike will take us to El Abantos (1753 m).  It belongs to Sierra de Guadarrama and from the summit we will enjoy great views of Monasterio de El Escorial. Our trail will continue a little bit longer taking us to the back side of the Abadía de la Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos, which belongs to the Patrimonio Nacional.

There are three options to get to El Escorial from Madrid:

  • Go by car.
  • Take bus number 661 from Moncloa bus station. You can check here the schedule.
  • Take the train C-8 direction to Ávila till El Escorial train station. You can check here the schedule.

Depending on the final decision, it has to be taken into account that:

  • Coming by car implies that the overall length would be the one indicated here.
  • Coming by bus would imply a total of 2.2 km more to the walking trail.
  • Coming by train would imply a total of 5.4 km more to the walking trail.

Scheme of the roundtrip from El Escorial to Abantos and Cruz de los Caídos

The starting point of the route is located at the “Arboreto de Luis Ceballos”, from where a steep ascent starts, crossing a pine forest. Pass through a rotary door.

After some kms we will arrive to a zone with some rocks at our right: continue following the main path till the highest point. From there, the path continues to the right passing by a forest, with a small river at the left. Following it you will get to an open place with a fountain at the right.

Continue straigh one until you cross a main path, take it to the right and then leave it to the left crossing the forest. You will be able to enjoy great views of Madrid and El Escorial. If you look to the left you will find the Abantos summit, only a few meters away from you.

From the Abantos summit, continue the rock wall, keeping it at your right.

Pass a door, continue till San Juan summit and straigh one until you see a the Cruz de los Caídos more or less at your right. At that point there is a pass point in the wall, so you can cross to the other side. Continue through the forest until some rocks from where you will have great views of the Abadía de la Cruz de los Caídos.

If you look below you, you will see a wide path, going to the right side of the mountain, that you have to follow. It goes more or less at the same altitude, no uphill no downhill, until you arrive to 2 rock chairs at your right. At that moment, the path is divided in 2: follow the one to the right with a slight uphill. With no possible lost, you will get again to the rock wall, with a wide entrance.

Cross it and follow the path downhill to the left. Once you get to the pass, follow the path to the right leaving the one you were following. In the next crossing, take the one to the right. You will arrive to a recreative area with tables and chairs for resting. Go slightly to the left downhill and follow a narrow path. Straigh one you will get to a green door, cross it and you are again at the road from where you have started.
